What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome that seems to afflict women more frequently than men. Although no one is entirely sure why some people get fibromyalgia, physical, or emotional trauma may play a role in triggering it. Scientists believe that it creates an imbalance between serotonin (a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good) and Substance P (a neurotransmitter than regulates your pain sensitivity). This imbalance makes you unusually sensitive to pain signals and other physical upsets.
Fibromyalgia is associated with a dizzying array of debilitating symptoms which may come and go. The classic signs include:
- Chronic fatigue
- Headaches and migraines
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Back pain, neck pain, or extremity pain
- Tender points caused by muscle knots
Unfortunately, it's not easy for a doctor to issue an official diagnosis for fibromyalgia. That's because the diagnostic protocol requires you to show a minimum number of tender points, distributed throughout the body, over the course of at least three months. Since fibromyalgia symptoms tend to disappear and recur at random intervals, it can be a very long time before an ordinary medical doctor can go ahead with treatment.
Relief for Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Other Common Symptoms
The good news is that you don't have to jump through all of those diagnostic hoops to obtain relief from your fibromyalgia symptoms. Our Greensboro chiropractor can work to normalize your musculoskeletal and neurological function, which in turn reduces your pain and other problems. Chiropractic adjustment can relieve joint pains magnified by fibromyalgia. DTS spinal decompression can treat cervical spinal stenosis, a common problem among fibromyalgia patients. Laser therapy can soothe and relax soft tissue, helping to "untie" those painful muscle knots that refer pain throughout the body.
